Release the Kraken

What’s the best way to celebrate Subtext’s 5th anniversary? Krakens, of course! For this epic show, we’ve been hunting down vintage aquatic-themed paintings for over a year now. Each artist was given a painting with a body of water in it, and then asked to “Kraken-ize” it by adding some sea monsters of their liking. A special thanks to Max Dolberg for photographing the event.

We’re looking forward to the first show of our summer season by Tijuana-based artist Charles Glaubitz, a successful illustrator who has shown in galleries around the world. Charles’ work is influenced by unseen things, mysticism, physics, comics, ancient culture, animation, myths, and alchemy. The Noosphere is the collective unconscious transformed into conscious awareness.

Plug Me Opening Night

Plug Me opened last Friday night to a large crowd of art-lovers, so many thanks to all of you who came out and supported the show. Mark Murphy has completely outdone himself by creating nearly 50 pieces for this exhibit including linoleum prints, letterpress prints, original watercolor paintings and jewelry, so if you missed the show, come out on Saturdays from 12-4pm and see it for yourselves.

This April, we are happy to introduce the first solo installation by San Diego-based artist, designer, publisher Mark Murphy. Murphy’s words and images invite the viewer to recognize that all living things have eyes to see, and they are requesting an increase in positive human interaction. Subtext was proud to kick off our 2011 gallery season with an all-girl lineup curated by Brody Albert (a Subtext alumnus). Make no mistake, these girls are badass. Whether a beautiful facade or grotesque reality, the work featured in That’s What She Said explores the idea of femininity, showcasing the contemporary female artist and the world she comes from. As long as we remember our dead, they will live forever. To celebrate our lost souls, this year, Subtext was happy to host a group show entitled (Day of Your Dead). This amazing show featured work by Israel Sanchez, Sandra Equihua, Martin Ontiveros, Amanda Visell, Lorelay Bove, Gerald de Jesus, Sadie Figueroa, Rhode Montijo, Simon Varela, and Jorge R. Gutierrez.

Greetings from the East

Greetings from the East opened to a warm reception, and we couldn’t have hoped for a better show to end our 2010 season. Matte Stephens captures his uniquely upbeat vision of the good life with friends and family in gouache paintings that both convey an immediate sense of fun and are reminiscent of a simpler time he wishes was today. He has a fondness for anything old and all friendly creatures.

Damages

Damages was N.C. Winters’ first solo exhibition with Subtext, in which he has created a collection of paintings that interpret the feelings of disrepair, sacrifice and loss. The vibrant colors, raw textures, and enchanting characters found in his work incorporate the juxtoposition of disparate themes in a very graphic, yet highly illustrative approach.

Plastic Fantastic

Plastic Fantastic was a group photography exhibition and benefit auction presented by APA San Diego and curated by respected photography gallery owner Joseph Bellows. Each artist approached their imagery with a singular voice, utilizing a variety of film types and techniques. Also featured a stellar set in the courtyard from San Diego funk/jazz ensemble, Pocket.

A dialogue for your eyes. Friends and fellow artists Grant Brittain and Josh Higgins put together an incredible body of work for their first show at Subtext. Brittain’s portraiture features icons and underground heroes. Higgins’ poster-art focuses on punkers, musical heros, and charitable causes. Together, the collective work suggests what it would be like to eavesdrop on these guys hanging out.
